What an inspiring day I had today! What started off as a quiet day quickly turned into a peaceful time of experimenting, learning, and sharing. The sun kept on peeking in an out of the clouds, giving us a good rhythm to follow.
When I arrived at VS Gallery today I saw somebody taking pictures by the stream. Sofia Ulff immediately knew it was Topi Pakarinen even before looking out the window and calling him inside. Topi obeyed and came to write some wishes. Over a pot of tea, my obsession with knots came out and he told me that he also makes macrame at home. So we changed views, took a couple balls of ribbon with us and found a tree in the front yard of Vanja Sea & Friends. Many good questions came up today. Why is it hard for some to write their dreams, hopes, and secrets? Does it have to be serious? How to show knot making in a clear and easy way? How to apply ryijy techinque to sculpture? Jeans and ryijy? Fluttering in the wind, we found a secret today in Swedish that said, "Min dröm är att vi ska skratta mycket mer!" It translates to, "My dream is that we'll laugh a lot more!" Beautiful!!

Teksti Fiskarsin museo +++ Ryijy starting from the 1800s On the right side of the wall hangs a ryijy which has a special scale-like pattern and has loops on both sides. This type of ryijy weaving pattern was typical of the Kisko region. The history of this ryijy is also related to Kisko. It came to Fiskars museum from Haapaniemi. Haapaniemi was originally a noble estate dating back to the 1500s, but through land acquisition it later moved to Fiskars. Kärkelä’s ironworks manager, Axel Jonsson, was interested in old objects. He was able to buy objects at Haapaniemi, which he then placed in a hunting cabin. During the Second World War, the item was moved safely out of Haapaniemi and it then became a summer resort. Friday, April 13th from 16:00–18:00 at Antique Cafe, Fiskarsintie 352 C, 10470 Fiskars You can check out Arlene's work here: http://arlene.edicypages.com/ http://ryijy.weebly.com/ Last night I attended the knitting circle at Cafe Antique. I left my knitting sticks at home so I brought my mini loom and giant ball of ribbons. There, I coincidentally happen to meet Anna Ulff whom I have heard such nice things about since my recent trip to Kokkola! And when I started telling her about Ryijy project a fellow overhead and suggested I read the book Ryijyn taikaa: Opas ryijyn suunnitteluun ja valmistukseen by Ulla Karsikas.
I immediately checked if the local library had it on the shelves and there it waited for me. My walk to and fro Pohjan kirjasto took about 2 hours. That is devotion. On the way back I ran into one of the ladies from last night's knitting circle and told her I had just arrived from my library walk. I showed her the book and she helped me figure out one of my persistent obstacles. The book is very detailed with pictures and descriptions, but I couldn't find the bit on how to take off the weaving from the loom when you are finished. My new friend with a basket hanging from her arm carrying a few empty beer bottles helped me! My circle of luck is complete. I am very excited that for the whole month of April I will be in Fiskars Village devoting my time to ryijy, knots, and creating spaces for spontaneous weaving! Keep posted for an Artist Meeting, public workshops, and surprise installations. To learn more about Fiskars AiR, please click here.
